The Partita No. 2 is one of the six works Bach wrote for solo violin. The Giga is the 4th dance before the monumental Chaconne, and it is a quick, lively dance. The piece is written in compound meter (12/8), with energetic rhythmic patterns that evoke the spirit of an Italian gigue, a lively baroque dance.

The Andante espressivo is the third movement of Debussy’s Piano Trio in G major, written in 1880 when he was just 18 years old. Unlike the lively first and second movements, this part of the trio is calm, flowing and full of feeling.

Libertango by Astor Piazzolla is a powerful and exciting piece that mixes tango, classical, and jazz. The title comes from “liberty” and “tango,” showing Piazzolla’s break from traditional tango music.

The Adagio from de Bériot’s Concerto No. 9 in A minor, Op. 104 is a slow and lyrical movement that focuses on tone, phrasing and expression. I performed this piece for my ABRSM Grade 8 violin examination, and it taught me the importance of playing with feeling and sensitivity.

Kabalevsky wrote his Violin Concerto in C major in 1948. The first movement is lively and full of character, with bright melodies, playful rhythms and contrasting lyrical sections that keep the music engaging. It was exciting to be the first performer of the evening and to open the festival.

The Concerto in F major, “L’autunno” is the third concerto from Vivaldi’s famous set The Four Seasons. Each concerto in the set represents a different time of year, and this one describes scenes from autumn. I performed the first movement, Allegro, which is lively and full of action.
