Libertango, Astor Piazzolla (Violin and Cello Duet)

Violinist: Audrey Foo, 11
Cellist: Mr James Ng

Venue: VOS Recital Studio
Date: 30 November 2024

This specific arrangement starts with a steady beat, setting the tango groove. As it progresses, the violin and cello interact more dynamically, sometimes echoing each other's phrases or playing in harmony. The music builds intensity through syncopated rhythms and dynamic contrasts, leading to a powerful climax before a decisive ending.

Performing Libertango was an unforgettable experience for me. As I played, I could feel the strong emotions that Piazzolla wanted to express — freedom, passion, and even a bit of struggle. The music wasn’t just about playing the right notes; it was about bringing the piece to life with energy and feeling.

I had to strive hard to keep up with the energy and dynamic level of James, who is an amazing cellist. His powerful playing really pushed me to bring out more intensity in my own performance. It felt like we were having a conversation through our instruments — sometimes agreeing, sometimes challenging each other.

I also had so much fun attempting to “tango” with James through music, matching his rhythms and style. I really appreciate how Piazzolla broke away from traditional tango to create something so bold and powerful. Playing Libertango made me feel free, like I was part of an exciting story.
