Lalo: Symphonie Espagnole Op. 21., 1st Movement
Summer Serenata, Violin Recital, MusArt Concert Hall
Date: 1 June 2025
Violin: Audrey Foo, 12
Even though it’s called a “symphonie,” this piece is actually a violin concerto written for the great Pablo de Sarasate, who was known for his elegant tone and effortless technique.
The first movement blends bold orchestral moments with graceful, dance-like violin melodies. I especially liked the Spanish flavor, with habanera rhythms and the Phrygian mode, a scale with a lowered second note that gives the music a mysterious, folk-like colour.
