Gala Concert Performance: Kabalevsky Concerto for Violin in C Major (1st movement)

I was extremely honoured to perform at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory for the first time! I would like to thank my violin teacher for believing me and patiently coaching me which allowed me to clinch first place at the Edinbinary International Music Competition.

Dmitry Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto in C Major, Op. 48, composed in 1948, bridges technical brilliance and expression with its sophisticated style. It was written post-war to reflect resilience and optimism. Kabalevsky’s concerto showcases unconventional melodies and dissonant harmonies on the piano, aligning with 20th century innovation and modern music.

While it holds on to some Russian folk influences, it ventures into new surprising harmonies and rhythms. tradition and modern innovation.

In performing this piece, I had to work on keeping my bowing light and controlled, especially during the running passages and quick string crossings. There were also parts where I needed to play more lyrically, using vibrato and dynamics to shape the phrases.

It was a fun and rewarding experience to bring out the joy and sparkle in the music while staying focused and expressive on stage.
