Visiting Artist Series: Koichiro Harada & Friends Chamber Recital

Featuring: Koichiro Harada & YST Faculty
Instrument: Chamber
Venue: YST Concert Hall
Date: 31 August 2023 7.30PM

Attending the chamber recital featuring Koichiro Harada and his colleagues was a truly inspiring experience. As a young violinist, witnessing such seasoned musicians collaborate was both educational and moving.

The evening began with Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44. From the first movement, Allegro brillante, the ensemble displayed a remarkable unity, with Mr. Harada leading with subtle cues and expressive phrasing. The second movement, In modo d’una marcia, had a solemn yet lyrical quality, and I was particularly struck by the seamless interplay between the strings and piano. The Scherzo was lively and precise, and the final Allegro ma non troppo brought the piece to a joyful conclusion.

After the intermission, the ensemble performed César Franck's Piano Quintet in F minor. This piece was more intense and emotionally charged. The first movement's dramatic opening set the tone, and throughout, the musicians conveyed a deep sense of passion and urgency. The second movement, Lento con molto sentimento, was beautifully melancholic, and the final movement built up to a powerful and cathartic climax.

Mr. Harada's leadership was evident throughout the concert. His expressive playing and attentive collaboration with his fellow musicians created a cohesive and compelling performance. As someone who aspires to play chamber music, this concert reinforced the importance of communication, listening, and mutual respect among ensemble members.
