As a fledgling vocal student, attending Julia Lezhneva’s recital felt like a masterclass in what the human voice is capable of. I went with a friend I performed with at ChildAid 2022, who is also a vocalist, and we were both completely captivated. The programme was incredibly diverse, ranging from Handel and Vivaldi to Schumann and Rossini, and it revealed the strength, flexibility, and clarity of her voice. What struck me most was how angelic her tone sounded, even in the most demanding passages.

She opened with Baroque arias, where her control and agility were astounding. Handel’s “Rejoice greatly” sparkled with joy and elegance, while Vivaldi’s “Agitata da due venti” showed her complete command over rapid runs and leaps. Even though the technical demands were enormous, her singing remained musical and light.

In the Romantic Liederkreis, she coloured each phrase with meaning, and with the english translations in the programme notes helping me greatly in understanding the meaning behind each phrase she sang. Pianist Pavel Nersessian supported her with sensitivity and grace, especially in the quieter moments.

Lezhneva ended the evening with Rossini’s La regata veneziana, which was playful and full of personality. Her expressions, gestures, and bright tone brought the piece to life and made the audience laugh and smile.

This performance taught me that technique is important, but it is clarity, intention, and honesty in the voice that truly reaches people. Julia Lezhneva is not only a virtuoso but also a storyteller, and watching her sing made me want to work harder on finding my own voice too.
