The concert opened with Rossini’s Overture to Il viaggio a Reims, played with spirit and clarity by the orchestra. It set a bright and energetic tone for the evening.
Next came the star of the night: Chloe Chua, performing Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major, a piece famous for its dazzling technique and bold personality. Her sound was clear and confident, floating easily above the orchestra. I was especially impressed by the precision of her ricochet bowing, harmonics, and left-hand pizzicatos — all delivered with control and grace.
In the Adagio espressivo, Chloe’s tone turned gentle and lyrical, allowing the melody to unfold naturally. The final Rondo sparkled with energy, and her phrasing gave the music charm beyond just virtuosity. As a young violinist, it reminded me that musical expression always matters more than just getting the notes right.
After the intermission, Debussy’s Nocturnes created a shimmering, dream-like atmosphere, while Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region brought the evening to a glowing, peaceful close.
